CLEAN UP EFFORTS ARE UNDERWAY AFTER AN EXXON MOBIL OIL SPILL IN MONTANA.
THOUSANDS OF GALLONS OF CRUDE OIL SPILLED INTO THE YELLOWSTONE RIVER.
OFFICIALS SAY THEY ARE MAKING PROGRESS, BUT FOR SOME ENVIRONMENTALISTS, IT'S NOT FAST ENOUGH.
SOME SAY THE OIL COULD SUFFOCATE INSECTS, ALGAE, BACTERIA AND SMALL FISH WHICH NEED OXYGEN BY TRAPPING THEM BELOW THE SURFACE.
MULE says: "Depending on how much oil gets on an animal, it could cause mortality. If it's not a significant amount of oil, it might not, actually, kill them outright. I don't know how much animals were here that would have actually.. could have gotten oil on them on them, that are terrestrial wildlife... Birds, obviously, can get away, deer and other animals can move away. The aquatic ecosystem is probably going to be a much more difficult thing to asses, because you got all these aquatic invertebrates that are living in this water, and they form the food base, the food chain for all the fish, and whatever else eats those fish. So, that effect could me more serious and more long-term..."
CLEAN UP CREWS ARE CONCENTRATING THEIR EFFORTS IN A NINETEEN-MILE RADIUS FROM LAUREL TO BILLINGS.
OFFICIALS ARE STILL LOOKING INTO THE CAUSE OF THE SPILL.
