Washington, UNITED STATES (USA), Wed 12 Sep 2012, 16:56 GMT

SENATOR RICHARD LUGAR...SHAKEN BY THE DEATH OF HIS FRIEND, CHRIS STEVENS...
THE U-S AMBASSADOR TO LIBYA WHO WAS KILLED IN THAT ATTACK ON THE CONSULATE IN BENGHAZI.
LUGAR IS THE RANKING REPUBLICAN ON THE SENATE FOREIGN RELATIONS COMMITTEE...WHERE STEVENS HAD WORKED FOR HIM.

REPORTER (off -cam) "what kind of a man was he?"

LUGAR says: "he was a brilliant scholar, but a wonderful personality, who had a thorough understanding of the complexities, not only of libya but the middle east. he devoted two decades of his life to foreign service. that was his life, and it was thrilling to see him before the committee as our nominee for ambassador to libya, just a short while ago, with his mother and his stepfather present. so, i'm deeply struck by this terrible news."

AMBASSADOR STEVENS -- A CAREER DIPLOMAT WHO SPOKE ARABIC AND FRENCH -- ALREADY SERVED TWO TOURS IN LIBYA, INCLUDING RUNNING THE OFFICE IN BENGHAZI DURING THE REVOLT AGAINST FORMER LEADER MUAMMAR QADDAFI.
THE U-S SENATE CONFIRMED STEVENS AS AMBASSADOR TO LIBYA EARLIER THIS YEAR.
STEVENS WAS FIFTY-TWO YEARS OLD.
