A SETTLEMENT HAS BEEN REACHED IN THE LAWSUIT OVER A PEPPER SPRAY INCIDENT AT U-C DAVIS.
THE UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA IS SET TO PAY NEARLY ONE-MILLION DOLLARS TO SETTLE THE LAWSUIT...
WHICH WAS FILED BY DEMONSTRATORS WHO WERE PEPPER-SPRAYED DURING AN "OCCUPY" PROTEST AT U-C DAVIS LAST FALL.
RISHER says: "The settlement that we're announcing today cannot undo what happened last November. Nothing can undo what happened on November 18. But what it can do is take some steps to preventing this from ever happening again, here at Davis or anywhere else."

MARIN says: "It provides, first of all, that there will be an amended complaint filed that will designate a class of people, not just the 21 persons who were named as individual plaintiffs in this case, but a class that includes everybody who was directly pepper-sprayed. Because we know that on November 18, through the wanton use of magnum containers of weapon-grade pepper spray, a lot more people than the 21 individual named plaintiffs were directly affected. Those additional persons will be able to come forward and claim an additional portion of this settlement that has been reserved for them. This settlement also provides notice to be given out to the entire student body that was enrolled during the November events, so everybody who received a direct blast of pepper spray will be able to get notice and submit a claim. That's very important."
UNDER THE PROPOSAL, U-C DAVIS WILL PAY 30-THOUSAND DOLLARS TO EACH OF TWENTY-ONE PLAINTIFFS...
PLUS AN ADDITIONAL TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY-THOUSAND FOR THEIR ATTORNEYS TO SPLIT.
