BEST-SELLING AUTHOR NELSON DEMILLE IS RETURNING TO BOOKSTORES... WITH THE RE-RELEASE OF HIS FIRST NOVEL.
DEMILLE'S "THE QUEST" - A RELIGIOUS THRILLER ABOUT A DUO ON A QUEST FOR THE HOLY GRAIL - LEADING ITS CHARACTERS ON A JOURNEY THROUGH ETHIOPIA AND THE VATICAN.
HE DISCUSSES THE RESEARCH HE HAD TO DO FOR THE BOOK - AS WELL AS WHY HE BELIEVES THE HOLY GRAIL CONTINUES TO FASCINATE PEOPLE.
DEMILLE says: "The search for the Holy Grail was part of western literature and storytelling for the last, almost, two-thousand-years. So, that element hasn't changed much, but, it's how people approach it and I describe this book as 'Indiana Jones meets The DaVinci Code'. It's a search for the Holy Grail in the jungles of Ethiopia. The book takes place in nineteen-seventy-four, seventy-five during the Ethiopian Marxists Revolution and so, we have a little bit of Doctor Zhivago in their too and old aristocracy and the old emperor being deposed and executed by the Marxists. There's a lot going on there, but, again, the story's been told in different ways starting with even, let's say, King Arthur, one-thousand-years ago and there's something about this quest for the Holy Grail that just captures people's imaginations and when I originally wrote it, the so-called 'religious thriller' was not big, but, of course, since Dan Brown's The DaVinci Code, the religious thriller has come back in this country and I think, um, you know, you have two elements going in. One is the thriller part, obviously, which people love. The other one is the religious part. People, I think, are looking for , um, you know, they're looking for something and religious books, um, have become, kind of, mainstream now. So, I was happy that, you know, what was old is new and I brought it back and, indeed, it was timeless as it turned out."
DEMILLE says: "I researched "The Quest" originally , um, mostly library research. Now, we have the internet and we can do it much faster. It's not particularly a personal topic, but, um, I think this whole idea of the quest for the Holy Grail, you know, a lot of people look at it as allegory, sort of an inner quest. They're looking for something and I think this really, um, really speaks to modern people. We're all looking for something without being, many of us are not over-religious, but I think we are spiritual. I think it's a spiritual country in many ways and we are looking for something within us and I think the book addresses a lot of that. We even say this in the book as much as you'd say action-adventure and a quest for the physical Holy Grail, it's a little bit of an inner journey too."
"THE QUEST" IS AVAILABLE IN BOOKSTORES ON ONLINE AS OF TODAY (9/17).
